Khanapa’s Treasury of Realization Songs

Selected couplets translated by Joe Loizzo

Our altruistic spirit lies (dormant like a seed),
Covered with mud, planted in the indestructible.
Its (flower of) ecstatic openness
Unfolds within our bodies, like a lotus.
Space is its water, its soil—boundless light, its (only) root—abandon!
Our central channel is its stalk, our crown syllable—its seed pod.
With left and right channels, sun and moon, both stopped—
Through its four nodes and leaves, great bliss flows!

Two Pyramidals, by Greg Dunn
Enamel on composition gold, 2010.

Pyramidal neurons, a.k.a. “psychic neurons,” are key cells in the prefrontal cortex and other brain regions that support self-awareness and social engagement. Built for plasticity and connectivity, they have been linked to the evolution of higher consciousness in primates and humans, and are thought to mediate the beneficial effects meditation has on attention and emotion.

Greg Dunn, both an artist and neuroscientist, has had works commissioned by many groups working at the interface of science and contemplation.
